Antioch Education
Along with new home developments, Antioch has recently opened four schools to accommodate the increase in students to the district. One high school and a middle school opened recently, and two elementary schools were opened in 1999 and 2000. In addition, improvements were made to Antioch High, the old high school, so it would not contrast poorly with Deer Valley, the new school, which has a solar-heated pool, a TV studio, a theater and a science lab with a wind tunnel. Antioch also runs its schools year round.

Antioch Housing
The oldest city in Contra Costa County, today Antioch is famous for its new homes. Over the past 20 years, the Delta town has built about 14,000 residential units, the majority of them single homes, with thousands more approved and awaiting construction. The first city in the county to incorporate (in 1872), Antioch anchored itself around the river and the railroads, a familiar pattern, grew slowly and by 1950 had about 11,000 residents. Divided by Highway 4, Antioch to the north encompasses the old town which has periodically added new homes, and to the south you will find the majority of new and varied developments. Today Antioch has over 30,000 residences, 90% of which are single-family detached homes. Although reputable as a community and historic town, Antioch's reasonable housing market is very alluring to new residents. A 3-bedroom house averages $250,000, which, in comparison to the surrounding cities in the Bay Area, makes living in Antioch affordable and attractive. Larger 4 to 5-bedroom homes are also offered in this area with equally advantageous prices.

Antioch Lifestyle
Just outside the city limits residents have access to a large park (47 acres with playing fields) which opened in 1993, water park with slides and pools, a seniors center, the Los Medanos Community College and a movie complex. Also available: a roller-skating rink, golf course, bowling alley, fishing pier, marinas, and close proximity to a large regional park. For individuals seeking to get away from the city, Tahoe, Yosemite and snow country are only 3-4 hours away. The Rivertown Jamboree and County Fair, annual events, draw thousands. Local amenities also include a post office with a philatelic center for stamp collectors, sports and activity programs for children and teens run by City Hall, lots of shops and stores (new Walmart), businesses and industries near the river, as well as Sutter Delta Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente outpatient clinic for medical needs (Kaiser is expanding the clinic and says that in about 10 years, it will build a medical center). Antioch is also attracting large housing complexes for the elderly.

Antioch Recreation
Although generally flat and suburban, Antioch has many recreational opportunities for varying activities and residents of every age. With Mt. Diablo ascending to the West, and the Delta shimmering to the northeast, there is definitely a lot to do! Built near the junction of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers, both of which divide off into countless miles of Delta waterways, Antioch is very close to swimming, boating, fishing, and water skiing. There are over five dozen clubs, civic, sports and cultural groups, 26 parks, and 18 playgrounds. Several restaurants have opened on the river, and the city has spent millions on its downtown: decorative street lights and brick crosswalks, reflecting efforts of attentive citizens and residents to make sure the city maintains its well-preserved identity.

Antioch Transportation
About 50 miles from San Francisco, residents and visitors can find BART stations in North Concord and Bay Point (near Pittsburg). These stations, along with improvements to Highway 4 (was widened through most of Pittsburg), have helped move traffic to and from the various workplaces in the Bay Area. Some people take Highway 4 southeast to Brentwood and pick up Vasco Road to Livermore and Interstate 580. The town also has an Amtrak stop.
